When we first arrived in New Zealand, everything felt new — fresh air, unfamiliar birdsong, and endless skies. On one of those early days, something magical happened: a Monarch Butterfly flew straight into my studio and landed gently on the shoulder of my young son. It felt like a welcome, as if nature itself had come to greet us.
I watched in awe. Seeing the Monarch up close, its sharp, vivid colours and intricate wing patterns took my breath away. That moment stayed with me and eventually transformed into this creation — a shawl that carries both the memory of that encounter and the magic of a new beginning.
Why the Monarch Butterfly?
The Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) Though not native to New Zealand, the Monarch Butterfly has become a beloved resident, breeding, feeding, and dancing through our gardens all year round.
To me, that butterfly wasn’t just a passing insect. It became a symbol of welcome, wonder, and connection. And in my artistic language, that meant: it needed to be felted into silk and wool.
How I Created This Monarch-Inspired Shawl
This piece is entirely handmade — I used:
Premium extra fine merino wool for softness and warmth
Sheer pure chiffon silk as the base, allowing light to dance through
Raw mulberry silk for subtle sheen and dimension
I worked with only water, olive oil-based Marseille soap, and my own hands — no machines, just rhythm and heart.
The fiery orange hues and sculptural black accents reflect the Monarch’s wings. It’s not a copy, but a tribute — a wearable memory of that first magical encounter.
